A dental crown is a tooth shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth, covering your natural tooth to restore its shape, size and strength or to improve the appearance. Crowns are permanently cemented into place, fully encasing the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line.

Reasons to Crown a tooth

  • Protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
  • Restore an already broken tooth
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Protect a tooth that had a root canal treatment

Permanent BridgePermanent Bridges

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap. These two anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth. In between the abutments is a false tooth connected to the crowns called a pontic. The bridge is permanently cemented into place.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small, sturdy, titanium post that acts as the root structure of a missing tooth. It is placed into your upper or lower jaw bone. After the bone has grown around and integrated with the post, the implant is covered with a crown or bridge. The implant is placed by an oral surgeon or periodontist, and the crown is fabricated by a general dentist.
