Sealants are protective resin coatings that cover the chewing surfaces of back teeth to help prevent tooth decay. Teeth have many natural grooves and pits that are very susceptible to decay, especially during the cavity prone years of children. A sealant is placed as soon as the child’s 6 and 12 year molars erupt.

Procedure:

The tooth is cleaned with a pumice paste, then dried and a slightly acidic solution (etch) is applied to help the sealant bond to the tooth surface. Then the tooth is painted with a very thin flowable coating that is clear or white. The sealant is dried immediately by a curing light.

Sealants

The sealants are inspected regularly at every check up. They can last years, but sometimes need to be repaired or replaced.
