All whitening systems are safe.

Reasons teeth get darker:

The most common include genetics, aging, consumption of staining substances (smoking, coffee, tea) tetracycline (antibiotic) staining and old fillings.

Options for whitening:

  • Over the counter whitening toothpaste can help with some mild staining caused by coffee, tea and smoking.
  • Over the counter white strips or trays are very popular and can work well if used properly. For best results get a system that is at least once a day for 30 minutes for 7-14 days. For public safety the FDA regulates the strength of over the counter whitening material. This whitener can work well for moderate whitening results. A higher potency whitener can only be dispensed by a dentist.

Professional Tray System

  • Trays will be made that are custom fit to your mouth.
  • Whitening gel is given. Wear once a day for 30 minutes for 7-14 days.
  • The result lasts for 3-6mths or longer, depending on your dietary habits.
  • After the initial 2 week whitening process a 1-5 day touch up may be needed within 6-8 months to sustain the color.

It is common to have some temporary sensitivity during whitening. Some tips on helping to prevent this are:

  • Using a sensitive toothpaste such as Sensodyne for 1 week before whitening, while you whiten and 1 week after
  • Rinsing with fluoride, Act rinse 1-2 times a day.
  • Skip a day in between each whitening session.
